Inside MSLG

Montessori School of Long Grove is a small private school founded in 1975. The school is certified by the American Montessori Society. It is also affiliated with the Association Montessori International, the Illinois Montessori Society, the North American Montessori Teachers Association and is registered with the Illinois Department of Education.

Our school accepts students from age ten months to twelve years. It is nonsectarian and welcomes boys and girls of all races, nationalities and creeds.

MSLG is staffed with experienced, certified Montessori teachers and carefully selected assistants are trained in the Montessori methods and philosophy. Teachers have earned AMS or AMI credentials appropriate to the level they teach.

We are a community of adults and children working together with the principal aim of helping children develop their own personal potential; academically, socially, physically and emotionally. We have adopted the Montessori philosophy as our way of life, and we use Montessori methods and materials to achieve our goals. We believe strongly that our students' daily school experience should be a happy and rewarding one. Eagerness to learn, learning for the joy of learning, wanting to know as much about their world
as possible -- we believe these are invaluable qualities that we can instill in our children.

Because children learn in relation to their environment, the Montessori School of Long Grove provides pleasant, comfortable indoor and outdoor surroundings. Multi-age grouping and our emphasis on cooperation, respect for the environment, and the rights and needs of others make it possible for our classrooms to function as small democratic communities.

We believe that, as much as possible, children should have the opportunity to learn through their own experience and research. Learning by doing enhances a child's self-esteem. The classrooms are rich in materials, many of which provide concrete representations of abstract concepts. The many animals and the vegetable and flower gardens at our school provide opportunities to learn respect for all living things in addition to serving as the basis for our study of biology.

Children are taken to libraries, museums, nature preserves, including day trips into Chicago and a variety of other places which complement their classroom studies. We encourage children to follow their own interests while they master the basic information and skills of all the academic subjects. Each child receives abundant individual attention and processes according to his or her own pace and ability.

Our curriculum is an integrated one. For instance, math, language, history and geography may all be learned while researching an ancient civilization or the customs and culture of another country. Art, music, cooking and physical education are also integral parts of the curriculum. MSLG believes that Montessori education truly is education for life!

Parents are encouraged to participate in the life of our school. They contribute their time and energy and share their knowledge and experience with us. The school also provides many opportunities for parents to learn more about education and child development

"The teacher must derive not only the capacity, but the desire, to observe natural phenomena. The teacher must understand and feel her position of observer: the activity must lie in the phenomenon." -- Maria Montessori
