Students Work

On this page you will find work from students at all levels.

We celebrate the sixth year student's graduation each Spring, when each student makes a speech. Here are reflections of one of our students upon his graduation day.

My Speech - by Alex

I came to Montessori in third grade. I came from a public school where I had spent kinder garden to second grade.

I was not happy in public school, and my second grade teacher made me feel uncomfortable, and would often yell at the kids. A friend told my mom about the Montessori school of Long Grove, and after visiting, my mom thought it was the right place for me.

I was fine but a little upset about leaving my friends and worried that I wouldn't make new ones.

Alex - Graduate 2008

At first, staying out of trouble was my biggest challenge; among other things, I did not want to learn new things, because I was afraid of getting the answers wrong. Maybe that stems from the fact that my second grade teacher would yell at me when I made a mistake.

The first day in third grade, I made two friends instantly. They helped me feel comfortable in the new environment. In Montessori, the kids are nicer than in public school, because they learn how to respect each other. We learn how to talk our differences out, instead of using violence.

The Montessori teachers listen to what you have to say. I always had the right to voice my opinion. The teachers helped me in allowing me to repeat a lesson until I got it. They let me develop my natural drive to learn without interfering, but with enough guidance.

My Montessori education helped me communicate better with others.

In public school, you sit at a desk and watch the teacher give directions on the board and copy them. Then at home you repeat those directions for homework. In Montessori you use your hands to learn a subject. Each subject has its own material, specifically designed for it.

The ability to move around the classroom kept me motivated. This structured freedom is in contrast to the sit still style of public school.

For me, my hardest subject in the beginning was math. Over the years, I improved significantly in every subject. It also showed that in the yearly tests.

I feel upset about leaving my friends, the great teachers, and the wonderful environment.

My hopes for my future are that I will do well in school, have a good job, and keep my love of learning, even when I am one hundred years old.

In August I'm going back to public school. I hope I'll do well, make friends, and use my Montessori experience to see things in a different way.

It has been an amazing four years. When I grow up I am putting my kids in a Montessori school. The world would be a better place if every child went to a Montessori school.

" The child is much more spiritually elevated than is usually supposed. He often suffers, not from too much work, but from work that is unworthy of him."
